At the beginning of April, the newest addition to Bothwell Street opened it’s doors a few days early for a trial run. I managed to secure a booking for the very first night and hopped on down to Gusto Restaurant and Bar, eager to try it out!
Gusto is already an established chain across the UK and many folk here in Glasgow were excited to see it arrive. I’d heard the buzz on the grapevine and had lots of high expectations. Of course, as I visited during the trial run before the official opening, I was prepared to allow a few things to go wrong as any new business needs a few days to iron out any issues.
On arrival we were initially very impressed by the premises and the decor inside. We felt very underdressed! The restaurant features a big center bar, surrounded by tables, and a big high ceiling helping to create a spacious dining space.
I had checked when booking that they would have gluten free pasta available, but still asked to see their allergy menu. I was given a big binder highlighting the allergens in each dish. As you can see, the pasta is marked as containing gluten, however since they have gluten free pasta it isn’t an issue. A few of the appetizers are safe, as are the mushroom risottos. Some of the meat and fish dishes are also marked gluten free, however I would check before ordering about the status of the fries. The menu does mark them as gluten free but I’m unsure as to how they are prepared so cross contamination might be an issue.
I stayed true to myself and ordered my favourite food – pasta. This time I chose a spaghetti bolognese. The menu is extensive and has lots of choices available but I like my pasta simple. My boyfriend had the 10oz Rib Eye which comes with a truffle butter sauce and mushrooms. He is a gluten eater so chose fries as his side. We were both very impressed with our meals. My pasta was a little undercooked but I find most restaurants struggle to cook gluten free pasta correctly and it didn’t affect my enjoyment of my meal in any way.
For dessert I had the lemon sorbet (yum my favourite!) and my boyfriend had the sticky toffee pudding, served with vanilla ice cream, and a coffee. I love sorbet but three scoops was a little too much for me!
Overall we were very impressed with our meal. The manager came over and asked us how we were enjoying everything and we were able to fill out a little comment card. Our waitress was excellent, she admitted as we were leaving that we had been her first table so we were impressed. The restaurant still had a few issues to work on, the food runners seemed to struggle carrying plates and the poor lad had difficulty serving us Parmesan, but this will all improve with time.
I would definitely eat here again. Thanks to all at Gusto for a great night!
